FW 190A-8/A-9 skins by Emel, January/February 2010. **Unmodded**

Looking at the photos of Paul Lixfeld, Victor Heimann or Heinz Aengenvoort in late 1944, I can't help wondering what crazy life these youngsters had to endure in the war. In the pictures none of these boys look older than 17 or 18. It was a crazy world, crazy life for these young boys and their flying machines.
They should have been going school, chase girls. Instead they went chasing large formations of heavily armed four engined bombers flying several thousand metres above. Day after day, dressed in heavy leathery flightsuits that didn't quite seem to fit them, they confined themselves in the fragile small aircraft topped up with volatile aviation fuel, oxygen bottles, bombs and rockets, to meet the challenge in the sky against ever increasing odds. Day after day, from dawn til dusk. Fewer and fewer returning.

When I was considering the choices of doing a sequel to the JG 301 skin project, I initially had several options in mind the strongest candidate for the project being the IV/JG 3 Sturm 190s. What made me turn away from them in the end was the fact that when viewing pictures of their aircraft I noticed that many of their Sturm 190's wore the blinkers the extra armor on the side windows. Now, we don't have those in IL-2 and since I couldn't make up my mind whether to ignore this fact or live with it, I put the whole project on hold and hurled myself to other skinning projects. Then I got a copy of Jean-Yves Lorant's and Richard Goyat's magnificent Jagdegeschwader 300 "Wilde Sau", a chronicle of a fighter Geschwader in the battle for Germany, Volume Two September 1944 - May 1945. When viewing the colour profiles I noticed among other things that only one of the Focke Wulf's seemed to wear the blinkers, the rest having standard canopies. This cheerful fact made me revive the Sturm-project, and so I hurried back to finish my Sturm-190 template. What you see in these skins are some of the late war 190A-8s, A-8/R2's, A-8/R8's and a single A-9 flown by the youthful pilots of the JG 300 "Wilde Sau" Geschwader, one of the most successful fighter units in the combat against the American heavies.

Skins

With its 57 skins, I believe this is the second largest skin pack I have realeased and comes right after the "Channel Front 190's" skin pack. Skins are based on the wonderful colour profiles of the JG 300 "Wilde Sau" book (P. 185-199) and include a large variety of camouflage patterns, some of them highly unusual. Even a solitary winter camouflage can be found among them. All the famous JG 300 190s are included, such as the "Rauhbautz VII", "Klle alaaf!", "Pimpf", Hubert Engst's "Yellow 2", Paul Lixfeld's "Muschi" and several less well known 190 fighters of JG 300. They have been reproduced here once again, according to the latest information available to me.

Textures

Some visual changes have taken place as I have once again made some tweaking to the template. I changed my standard colour for the RLM 76 Grey-Blue to a new darker version. It now brings some of the weathering of the underside more visible the way it was originally ment and the new colour enhances the "butcherbirds" natural aggressive and sinister look. Additional panel lining was added to enhance certain areas such as the underside ailerons, landing flaps underside, wheel covers, and most notably the cowl panel covering the machine guns. Additional special effects were added to the upperside wings as well as the fuselage sides. Furthermore, the small Yellow ring seen on the cowl panel on some of the 190's indicates that the original aircraft had been fitted with an uprated BMW 801D-2 engine.

The wing camouflage patterns on the skins are purely variations of the standard 190 pattern and should not be considered 100 percent historically accurate. As colourprofiles only reveal one side of the aircraft (usually the port side) the starboard side fuselage camouflages on these skins are purely fictional, interpretations to fill the gaps. All in all these skins should be considered semihistorical even though markings may be historically accurate.

Important!

If you are reading this you have downloaded the unmodded version "JG 300_FW 190A-8_9 skins" ment for the standard IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. If you are using mods, such as UI 1.1 or other you should download "JG 300_FW 190A-8_9 skins mod" which includes the exact same skins, but the panel lines of the armored cowl ring and the spinner spirals have been optimized for the altered 190A 3D-model of the modded IL-2.

Notes on the skins & template:

Skins are based on colour profiles (p.185-199) in Jean-Yves Lorant'sand Richard Goyat's magnificent Jagdegeschwader 300 "Wilde Sau", a chronicle of a fighter Geschwader in the battle for Germany, Volume Two September 1944 - May 1945.

This pack includes 57 skins, 19 fully marked, 19 swastikas, and 19 blank skins. IMPORTANT! These skins are for the UNMODDED standard IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.

Apart from FW 190A-9 "Blue 7" which goes to the FW190A-9 folder, slip the BMP files into your Il-2 Sturmovik/Paintschemes/Skins/FW190A-8 folder. The skins should work the next time you start the game. Enjoy.

The template was redrawn from the original FW 190A void files.

The outstanding mechanical layer by Fly-By-Shooter & Aces was obtained from Simmers-Paintshop.

Many thanks to you all.

These skins are not to be uploaded further without my permission. You may rework these skins for your personal use, and publish them with your missions & campaigns, but not use them in any commercial way. Please do not remove credits. Thank you for downloading these skins.
